Europeanist Anthropology / Call for Papers / SAE @ AAAs 2017

The Society for Anthropology of Europe (SAE) would like to invite colleagues to submit executive sessions, volunteered sessions, and poster presentations for this year’s 116th AAA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC (November 29 – December 3, 2017). The Society welcomes experiential, innovative, and collaborative sessions, individual papers, and posters that focus on historical and contemporary problems related to European societies and cultures – including (not limited to) questions of political economy, migration, race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ecology and the environment, kinship, class, nationalism, health, security, and social movements.

We particularly welcome submissions that engage creatively with this year’s conference theme Anthropology Matters, which calls for anthropologists to employ their critical skills to address contemporary issues of social injustice, health and wellbeing, and environmental challenges. In the decade since the global economic crisis, Europe has been riven by increasing economic inequality, rising nationalist sentiment, and socio-political tensions over migration and reform. The SAE invites submissions considering how these developments have contributed to the (re)writing of histories, presents and futures, and how anthropologists might intervene into this process on behalf of subaltern voices and practices.

The deadline for Executive Session submissions is Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 5pm EDT.

The deadline for Invited and Volunteered Panel, Individual Paper, Roundtable Sessions, and Poster Submissions is Friday, April 14, 2017 at 5pm EDT

Submissions for executive and volunteered sessions should contain a session title and abstract (of no more than 500 words) and individual abstracts (of no more than 250 words), paper title and keywords. Individual papers and poster submission should contain a presentation title, abstract (of no more than 250 words), and keywords. In the case of roundtables, the submission should contain a session abstract (of no more than 500 words), title and keywords. No individual abstracts from participating presenters are required for roundtable submissions.

More information on proposal submission types, rules for submission and participation, and access to the online portal can be found on the AAA website.

If you are considering proposing a session with us, have any questions, or are looking for additional presenters to make up a session, please do not hesitate to contact Nicolette Makovicky, Program Chair 2017, [email protected].
