CES/SAE Pre-dissertation Award Winner Announced
On November 16, 2015 by Nadeen ThomasThe CES/SAE fellowship was awarded to Sarah French Brennan for her pre-dissertation project, “Intimate Nation: Sexuality and Asylum in the Netherlands.” Sarah is a PhD student in the Applied Anthropology program of the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. (She entered the program in 2010 and received her MA in 2013). Sarah conducted pre-dissertation fieldwork in Amsterdam to examine experiences of Muslims claiming asylum in the Netherlands for fear of persecution in their home countries for being one of the categories of “lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.” She is interested in how the formal processes of claiming asylum as a sexual minority produces a specific type of subject.
