SAE Call for Papers (2023 AAA Annual Meeting)
On February 25, 2023 by Ognjen KojanićFrom the ongoing Russian aggression and proxy wars in the Ukraine, which caused, among many things, high energy prices and millions being killed or displaced, to the mess of Brexit and pandemic recovery, Europe is writ by geo/political complexities: some transient, others transitional, but all transformative. Many an actor participates in the making of these complexities, as instigator, collaborator, or resister, from within and outside the wider region/imagination/field of power that many call “Europe”. None of these is new. Yet, the particulars of the unknown in each case, and the ways in which actors and agents engage with them, challenge scholars and students to rethink and rejig their disciplinary conventions, as well as their conceptual and methodological toolkits, to keep pace. A second challenge is how to rise to the call for a publicly engaged scholarship.
As a long-standing section of the American Anthropological Association dedicated to the study of all things anthropological in, of and about “Europe” broadly defined in time and space, The Society for the Anthropology of Europe (SAE) invites submissions for individual presentations (papers, posters, flash presentations, talks) and group presentations (panels, roundtables, conversations, interviews, podcasts), including invited sessions, for in-person or online delivery. In addition to the Society’s long-standing welcome of proposals focusing on diverse aspects of contemporary and historical European societies, this year, we are particularly interested in submissions that engage with questions of how the world is made, seen, lived, and defied by those grappling with the forces of the climate, energy, geopolitics, and all types of possibilities in the exercise of collective power and mobilization, in (or in the name of) Europe, both within and beyond its boundaries. Submissions are encouraged to engage with the annual meeting’s theme “Transitions”. All submissions must be started no later than 22 March and submitted by 29 March.
For invited session proposals, please submit an abstract and list of potential participants (indicating whether their participation is confirmed or tentative) to SAE Program Chair Bilge Firat (bohearn@utep.edu) and Program Chair–Elect Smoki Musaraj (musaraj@ohio.edu) as early as possible, but no later than 17 March to grant us time and opportunity to review your proposals for a pre-selection and selection of potential co-sponsorships. The SAE can sponsor one invited session or co-sponsor two. If you believe that your session would be a suitable candidate for a co-sponsorship, please indicate the relevant section so that we can get in touch with their program chair(s).
Please feel free to get in touch with Bilge for any questions and inquiries regarding this year’s SAE program. We look forward to receiving your submissions.
